Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Spread butter generously on the outside of both bread slices. Place one slice, buttered side down, into the skillet.

Layer half of the shredded mozzarella on the bread in the skillet. Drizzle evenly with pizza sauce, then arrange halved pepperoni slices on top. Sprinkle with sliced basil leaves and cover with the remaining mozzarella.

Place the second slice of bread on top, butter side up. Cover the skillet with a lid and cook undisturbed for about 1 minute to begin melting the cheese.

Remove the lid and check if the bottom slice is golden brown. Continue cooking for approximately 2 more minutes until a deep golden crust forms.

Gently press down on the sandwich to ensure cheese adhesion. Carefully flip using a thin spatula, cover again with the lid, and cook for another 3 minutes until the second side is golden brown and cheese is melted. If needed, add 1 teaspoon of water to the pan edge before covering to create steam and improve melting.
