# Ingredients:

→ For the Cake

01 - 1 ½ cups (6 oz) German chocolate, chopped
02 - ¾ cup (1 ½ sticks) unsalted butter
03 - 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
04 - ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
05 - 4 large eggs, separated
06 - 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
07 - 3 cups all-purpose flour
08 - 1 ½ tsp baking powder
09 - ¾ tsp baking soda
10 - ¾ tsp salt
11 - 1 ½ cups buttermilk

→ For the Cheesecake Layer

12 - 12 oz cream cheese, softened
13 - ⅓ cup granulated sugar
14 - 1 large egg
15 - 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract

→ For the Frosting

16 - 1 cup (4 oz) German chocolate, chopped
17 - ½ cup unsalted butter
18 - 2 cups powdered sugar
19 - 2 tbsp milk
20 - 1 tsp vanilla extract

→ For the Topping

21 - ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans (toasted if desired)

# Steps:

01 - Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans. Line with parchment paper.
02 - Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C). Beat cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Add egg and vanilla and mix well. Pour into a lined 9-inch round pan and bake for 25–30 minutes, until set. Cool and refrigerate until ready to use.
03 - In a saucepan, melt German chocolate and butter over low heat. Let cool slightly. In a large bowl, beat granulated sugar, brown sugar, and egg yolks until fluffy. Stir in the melted chocolate and vanilla. In another bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add dry mixture to the wet ingredients in 3 additions, alternating with buttermilk. In a separate bowl, beat egg whites to stiff peaks and fold into the batter gently.
04 - Divide the batter evenly between the 3 pans. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pans, then remove and cool fully on wire racks.
05 - Melt German chocolate and butter in a saucepan over low heat. Let cool slightly. Beat together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla, then add melted chocolate mixture. Mix until smooth and spreadable.
06 - Place the first cake layer on a serving platter and spread a layer of frosting. Gently place the chilled cheesecake layer on top. Add the second cake layer and more frosting. Top with the third cake layer and frost the top and sides of the cake. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts or pecans.
